Heritage Home For Women
In 1868, Schenectady residents recognized the need for a caring environment for older women. To that end, an organization, known as the “Haven of Rest” was formed. The original location of the residence was on Green Street, in the heart of the Stockade area. In 1901, the name changed to the “Old Ladies Home” and in 1905, the present home at 1519 Union Street was opened to accommodate 36 women and a round-the-clock staff.
In 1968, the name was changed again to “Heritage Home for ‘Women”. At present, the Home reaches full capacity at 36 residents. It is owned and operated by a Board of Trustees under the rules and regulations of the New York State Department of Health.
Heritage Home for Women has been beautifully maintained over the years and features all of the modern amenities you would come to expect in today’s adult care facility living.
At Heritage Home, there are trained, caring staff 24/7/365, who attend to the special needs of our residents, plus provide the round-the-clock supervision in a friendly, homelike environment.
Our residents are ambulatory and like to walk the grounds or sit on our front porch. They enjoy the friendship and companionship of a congregate environment in a home-like setting. Meals are provided in our lovely dining room, and opportunities for conversation, and activities abound.
Some residents require assistance with their personal care, or medications, but many are still very independent. Friendly staff are available, day or night, to give a hand whenever needed
