Independent Living

For most seniors, there is a strong desire to maintain an independent lifestyle. However, family members fear that their aging loved ones will be alone and unable to take care of themselves should an accident occur. An independent living situation is suitable for any healthy and active senior who is 55 and older. Many seniors who do not want to deal with the heavy maintenance that comes with owning a home, or are unable to keep up with the housing costs can consider living in an independent senior community.

These communities allow aging seniors to remain active while giving family members peace of mind. Independent living situations include apartment rental communities, condos, townhouses, cottage style living, and retirement complexes. These living situations offer healthy seniors the opportunity to be independent but socially active within a large community. Independent living residences provide many services and conveniences to its residents. Most provide amenities such as daily meals served in a dining room or restaurant, day trips and social activities, laundry service, internet access, cable tv, gyms, fitness centers, and transportation. This takes a significant burden off a senior’s shoulders, allowing them to enjoy their golden years in comfort, security, and joy.

Independent Living Is Different From Assisted Living

Independent living communities and assisted living communities offer different services and amenities. If the senior is in good health and is active, then an independent living situation is suitable. There is more freedom and flexibility to live life on their own within a community. Unlike assisted living, independent living communities will not have 24/7 medical assistance or personal care. The living situation will not include the costs of any medical attention or personal care services. Depending on the community, there may be a health center available, but most medical services will have to be privately pursued.

In an assisted living situation, seniors who need help completing activities of daily living (eating, bathing, dressing, toileting, etc) will require personal care around the clock. In some cases where there are medical conditions or health concerns, there will be trained staff who care for these needs. These attentive services are not provided at an independent living situation since most residents are able-bodied and healthy. However, in an assisted living situation, this service is provided since most residents are not as active and are unable to complete certain tasks by themselves.
